Supreme Court: Freebies Announced by Political Parties Not a Good Practice

The Supreme Court has criticized the practice of political parties offering free schemes during elections, stating that it discourages people from working hard as they receive benefits without effort. The court emphasized that while governments should provide amenities, they should also involve citizens in the country's development. The court also instructed the central government to clarify the timeline for the Urban Poverty Eradication Mission. This case will be revisited in six weeks.

Supreme Court: Freebies Announced by Political Parties Not a Good Practice

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has criticized the practice of political parties announcing free schemes during election times. In a petition related to providing shelter to the homeless in urban areas, the court expressed its views on the impact of freebies.

The court stated that free schemes are not beneficial. Unfortunately, they have led to people not coming forward to work hard as they receive income without any effort, due to free rations and cash benefits. While governments' goal of providing amenities to the public is good, people should be made partners in the country's development. The court questioned whether this is happening due to freebies and expressed that announcing such free promises during elections is not the right approach. Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih shared this opinion.

Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the bench that the process of the Urban Poverty Eradication Mission is ongoing, and the government is preparing plans to address multiple issues, including providing shelter to the homeless. The court, in response, directed the central government to explain the timeline for completing this mission. The case will be heard again in six weeks.
